 Ammonites, or ammonoids ( Latin Ammonoidea) are a subclass of extinct cephalopods that existed from the Devonian to the Cretaceous . The Ammonites got their name in honor of the ancient Egyptian deity Amun with twisted horns. Ammonites became extinct during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction . Rare specimens have bright, colorful, mesmerizing play and glow. Mostly not bright, dark brown, ocher shades. The ammonite shell was divided into many chambers, the closest to the mouth was inhabited. The length of the living chamber varies from 0.5 to 2 turns. Most of the chambers, judging by the modern nautilus , were filled with gas (air chambers), several with liquid (hydrostatic chambers). The partition between the chambers of the ammonites has a corrugated edge, which forms a complex line of attachment to the shell - the lobed line. Its structure is one of the main systematic features of ammonites.
